Order Fried Chicken with your smart phone #mpos

KFC is piloting a service in the UK that enables users to order and pay for food on their smartphones before collecting it from the nearest branch of the fast-food chain. Sister company Pizza Hut was an earlier innovator in this space, along with app developers like Just Enjoy out of Orange County, California.

Mark Kalinowski of Janney Capital Markets reports that major pizza chains Domino’s and Papa John’s have reported in the past year that digital ordering is now accounting for between 35 percent and 40 percent of sales.

The challenge for KFC will be the “fresh factor.” Unlike pizza, which still tastes good after sitting under a heat lamp for extended period of time waiting for customers to retrieve their order, fried chicken can taste greasy and soggy after sitting under a heat lamp.
