With 1.5 million Android activations every day, there will be two billion Android devices “within a year or two”, according to Eric Schmidt, executive chairman of Google, speaking at the D:Dive into Mobile event.
Schmidt said there are more than 750 million Android devices in use today, currently supported in 160 countries by 320 operators.
Driving growth is the rate at which hardware and data costs are dropping. Schmidt said that phones and tablets will be “phenomenally cheaper” within four years.
To put it all into perspective, the first Android-powered phone was sold in October 2008, activating an average of 456,621 mobile devices each day since.
