Long Beach-based car dealer Cal Worthington, the Oklahoma native whose old-time carnival flair built one of the most successful car dealerships west of the Mississippi, has died. He was 92.
Worthington, best known for his wacky late-night television commercials featuring “My Dog Spot,” died Sunday at his home on the Big W Ranch near Orland, Calif.
As a kid growing up in Long Beach, we would watch him film his television commercials featuring big cats, pigs, snakes, and elephants – each named “Spot” – at his Worthington Ford dealership on Bellflower Blvd.
More than an inspiration for this aspiring pitchman, to be sure….
